We were instructed to clear a house, 2 workshops, garage, sheds and cutback the immediate garden only to allow access from the house to the outbuildings. The property belonged to our customers' elderly relative who had lived there for a very long time but was now living in a care home and needed to sell the house and the contents. After assessment, we advised there was a lot of machinery in the large workshops which if in good condition, the family could sell at auction. Our customer and her family decided to get the full property cleared of all unwanted items first, leaving just the machinery and anything else we may unearth during the clearance that they wished to keep.

It only took our team 5 days and 11 tonnes to clear this beautiful property - even though we stumbled across an additional 2 tonnes of wood hiding in the overgrowth that no-one knew was there! Our customers did not live close to the property but had stayed local during the clearance and were so pleased with not only the clearance of the property but that we'd put aside all photographs, letters and documents we found for them and they enjoyed going through these, when they popped in each day. They asked for the small tools and small bits of usable materials to be left in the large workshop as well as the machinery and hoped the new buyer would enjoy having these bits in their new workshop!

We were appointed to clear a 2 bedroom bungalow and garage in Corbridge, Northumberland, on behalf of a customer whose loved one had been placed into a nursing home. The customer's family had already been through the property in detail, deciding what they did and didn't want and taking away everything they wished to keep — which is why it was quite sparse of many items we usually clear from properties. The garage was a different story: it was where the bulkier, heavier items had built up over the years, and clearing it in full — then removing and disposing of those awkward pieces — made up the bulk of the job. It was all completed in under 2 hours.

Acting on behalf of a lovely family from the North East, we cleared a well known 30 plus room mansion, that one of the family members had been renting for over 40 years from Lord Howick of Alnwick, Northumberland, before moving into a nursing home due to ill health in June 2007.

The property was full from floor to ceiling in almost every room with furniture, books, pictures, personal items, bric-a-brac and litter that had accumulated and been hoarded for over 40 years. Most of the furniture, personal items and bric-a-brac had been left in quite a state over the years due to an infestation of woodworm and rodents, which had gnawed their way through almost everything or infected it with their faeces and urine. Any items that were salvageable (some books, clothing, pictures, brass-ware and pieces of furniture) were either kept by the family themselves or donated. However 90% of everything in the property and adjacent barns, outhouses and garages were disposed of by way of 14 skips that we hired ourselves (12 double large and 2 small) and 2 full van loads using our own Abacus vans. We also contracted a scrap metals dealer to take away cookers, washers, fridges, freezers and other metal parts. The job took 10 working days in total (two weeks, working five days a week) with a team of up to 6 staff members on site each day. In order to complete the job in a timely fashion we actually stayed on the premises by bringing our caravan (pictured) with us, only going home at the weekends.

So if you ever think the job you need doing is too big for Abacus, we've never faced a property we couldn't clear yet!
