Public-sector clearance · a college

A college cellar void, cleared in under 3.5 hours

Cellar void clearance in a college basement

We were appointed to clear a void — what can only be described as a cellar — beneath a college, reached only through a trap door in the floor and a servicing door in a wall. From floor to ceiling the space was just under 5ft, so it was impossible to stand up straight, and there was no lighting at all. To work safely, the team rigged up their own lighting before removing 10 old desks, more than 50 chairs, 40 desk tops, various musical instruments, old computer parts, scrap metal, paperwork and other junk. In all, the contents removed and recycled came to just over 2 tonnes — and the whole job was completed in under 3.5 hours by four members of staff.

We were called in one September to clear a private property that had fallen into disrepair, with the garden overgrown and access far from easy. The customer wasn't present — we'd collected the keys beforehand. The team arrived just before 9am and took a room each. One of the lads was clearing a bedroom shelf when something dropped to the floor; he picked it up and realised he was holding a rusty old hand grenade. He set it down carefully on the windowsill and got everyone out of the building. We couldn't be sure it was inert — it had rusted, but the pin was still in — so we called the police, who arrived quickly, cleared the area, closed the road and moved our van out of range. The bomb squad confirmed it was a genuine World War 2 grenade that had long since been discharged of its explosives. We weren't allowed to carry on that day, but we returned the following week once the property had been declared safe and finished the clearance without any further surprises. The story even made the local papers.
