It’s thought that around 1 or 2 people in every 100 have a problem with hoarding that seriously affects their life.
A hoarding disorder is a medically recognised mental disorder where someone acquires an excessive number of items and stores them in a chaotic manner, usually resulting in unmanageable amounts of clutter. The items can be of little or no monetary value. The person may keep the items for reasons that are not obvious to other people, such as for sentimental reasons, or feeling the objects could be useful.
Attempts to discard things often bring up very strong emotions that can feel overwhelming, so the person hoarding often tends to put off or avoid making decisions about what can be thrown out.
Compulsive hoarding can also be indicative of other significant health problems please see NHS website for further information and advice.
Clutter can pose a health risk to the person and anyone who lives in or visits their house. For example, it can:
Our customers may contact us when a loved one has passed away, has been taken into court of protection care or have executor responsibilities and had no idea until recently that there was a problem. The circumstances can be complicated and feel overwhelming – we take great pride in being able to be the professional, respectful and reliable help needed for these occasions.
Abacus House Clearance has successfully cleared many hoarded/verminous homes over the years – there is nothing our teams haven’t seen before! From biohazard body fluids, offensive waste (human or animal faeces), rotten food and takeaway containers, properties jam-packed with thousands of newspapers, decades worth of washing up and recycling – this is what we do!
Whether all that is needed is for the clutter to be removed from one room as a starting point, for kitchens and bathrooms to be cleared and cleaned or the whole property is to be cleared – we can help.
Our teams will empty cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, there is no need for you to bag or box anything up. We can clear the property of all rubbish, furniture, bric-a brac, clothes, bedding, crockery and life items (junk). Our teams can disconnect washing machines, gas cookers if they have a flexi hose connector, remove carpets, stairlifts and pianos (as long as they’re on the ground floor).
We also clear lofts and attics, cellars, sheds, conservatories, out-houses and garages. We can provide cleaning and garden tidy services as part of house clearances to help improve the property’s rental or selling appeal.
A property that contains any of or all of the following kind of waste: decaying food, human feces, animal feces, bodily fluids (human or otherwise), animal carcasses, trauma scenes, death in the property, drug paraphernalia (needles etc.), and the general decaying of waste itself is classified as a verminous clearance. This waste cannot be disposed of with or as general household waste.
As difficult as it may be for friends, relatives and loved ones to see the conditions of a hoarded home, please be mindful that the person may realise they have a problem but are reluctant to seek help because they feel extremely ashamed, humiliated or guilty about it and will need to be supported with patience and sensitivity.
We appreciate this is a very difficult process for our customers and right from the first contact – we will support and advise on the different options and strategies available to help make everything as hassle-free and easy as possible for you.
We ask very specific questions for each clearance so we have a clear understanding of what is to be removed and what is to remain before a clearance takes place. We encourage our customers to identify important items that they want to keep so they can rest assured that their wishes are considered and treasured items are kept safe.
We understand it may be too difficult to witness the clearing of a property – you do not need to be there on the day. Our teams use the written instructions you provide as their guidance, we can call you and check what your wishes are if any queries arise during the clearance and we can send you pictures of the completed job with your invoice.
