Enfield hit by nearly 10,000 cases of fly-tipping in year

ENFIELD suffered almost 10,000 reported incidents of fly-tipping in 2009,
according to Enfield North MP Joan Ryan.

In November 2009 alone, there were nearly 1,400 reported cases of fly-tipping, she said.

She was speaking yesterday in the House of Commons when presenting a new bill that would require local authorities to provide information on how quickly they respond to reports of fly-tipping.

Although local authorities now have increased powers to take action against fly-tippers, she said that fly-tipping remained a big problem in her constituency.

The bill, if passed, would require local authorities to submit information to the Environment Agency (EA) about their response times to cases of fly-tipping.

They are already required to submit information to the EA about the extent of fly-tipping in their area, how they tackle it and how much it costs to clean up.

MP Ryan believes that requiring the additional information on response times would encourage authorities to be more pro-active and that fly-tipping would be reduced.

“No local authority would want the dubious title of ‘the slowest council in Britain to deal with fly-tipping’, and no voter would tolerate a council that dragged its heels in removing rubbish,” said Ryan.

“Publishing response times is not just about getting councils to remove rubbish more quickly. Important though it is, it is also about reducing the amount of fly-tipping in the first place. Removing rubbish quickly would also act as a deterrent to fly-tippers.”

The bill will get a second reading in the House of Commons on 30th April.
