Cardiff rubbish transport deal agreed
10 February 2010
A DEAL has been agreed to establish a facility for rail transport of rubbish from Cardiff to the planned £400 million waste energy plant in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.
The facility will have the capacity to handle all Cardiff’s waste.
Under the agreement signed by Freightliner and Covanta Energy, a rail-linked transfer station will be sited at Freightliner’s South Wales International Freight Terminal at Wentloog.
The rubbish will be transported to the Covanta, Brig y Cwm plant in Merthyr Tydfil.
Freightliner Heavy Haul commercial director David Israel said: “The waste facility will enhance the terminal and sits alongside the existing deep-sea and domestic services offered through the terminal.
“This is the first part of a long-standing development which will eventually see Freightliner transporting fuel into Covanta’s Brig y Cwm site by rail.”
Covanta Energy’s UK managing director Malcolm Chilton said: “It will use the same roadway as Lamby Way landfill site, which is due to close this year, so there will be no increase in traffic used to transport waste.”
