Doncaster cleans up town’s young litterbugs

DONCASTER youths caught dropping litter are to face harsher punishment.

Previously, youths from 12 upwards who are caught littering were issued with written warnings. Now they face a fixed penalty of £75.

The local council will drop the fine, however, if the offender spends three hours cleaning up litter in the South Yorkshire town.

If the offender does not attend the clean-up session, held on Saturdays, the council will pursue the fine and the youth may have to appear in court.

The idea behind this community-service type of punishment is that the youth rather than the parents will be affected.

Younger children, aged 10 and 11, caught dropping litter will be issued with a warning letter, and a copy will also be sent to their parents.

Councillor Cynthia Ransome said: "Many young people in Doncaster care passionately about our local environment but unfortunately there are a few who seem reluctant to use litter bins.

"Rather than imposing fines, which might end up being paid by parents, this new approach will cut into the young people's pocket money or free time.

"This will make them reflect on the impact of them dropping litter, and how much work this creates for those who have to pick it up and the cost to the taxpayer."
