Longhope, Gloucestershire family fill just one rubbish bin in year

A FAMILY in Longhope, Gloucestershire are leading the way when it comes to reducing the amount of rubbish they have to throw out.

Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, announced last year that the UK should aim be to become a zero-waste country – or as close to it as possible.

The Strauss family have almost achieved that goal – at the family level. They filled just one rubbish bin during the whole of 2009.

By various means they managed to reduce the amount of rubbish to a tiny amount each week. They accumulate little packaging because they grow much of their own food, compost organic matter and buy food only from local stores.

The Strauss family also take their own reusable packaging to the local butcher. According to a number of studies, packaging contributes a large proportion of the rubbish that ends up in landfills.

The family also buy clothes from second-hand shop.

The UK lags behind most European countries in recycling and waste management. Recycling rates are rising but there’s a long way to go before it approaches becoming a zero-waste country.

As world leaders fail to achieve agreement on climate change, it’s emphasised that change must come from the bottom. The Strauss family are showing an example.
