Woolwich street rubbish mainly related to food
25 January 2010
FAST-FOOD packaging accounts for more than one-third of litter in Woolwich town centre, according to a survey.
Paper bags, cartons, wrappers and plastic straws accounted for most of the litter found in the streets.
The environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy surveyed 20 towns and cities in November 2009. It found that most were badly affected by litter that generally was food-related.
The litter included wrappers for burgers, pastries, pies, chewing gum and chocolate, as well as bottles, cans and coffee cups.
In Woolwich town centre, 34 per cent of the litter derived from fast-food outlets, 22 per cent consisted of litter related to drinks, and 14 per cent was related to smoking.
Cabinet member for neighbourhood services Cllr Maureen O’Mara said: "Like Keep Britain Tidy, the council is urging people to respect their towns and cities and use a bin for their fast food, confectionery, or cigarette litter.
"People need to take pride in where they live and stop treating the streets like a dumping ground. Not only does litter look unsightly, it is a massive problem that costs the taxpayer £780 million a year to clean up.
“Fast-food litter encourages rats and litter also creates a feeling of neglect."
