Northampton residents face ‘fly-tipping’ fine for overflowing bins

NORTHAMPTON residents with overflowing bins face being fined for fly-tipping.

Northampton Borough Council has outraged local taxpayers by issuing the warning to anyone who puts out too much rubbish when their waste is collected – at the beginning of January.

Residents face a £100 fine if their extra rubbish leads to overflowing bins on collection day.

The council’s intention is to encourage people to think about wasteful habits at Christmas.

A council spokesman said: "We appreciate that more waste is generated during the Christmas period but when putting out their rubbish, residents with wheelie bins must ensure it is all contained within the bin with the lid closed.

"Additional waste left to the side of bins will not be collected and will be classified as fly-tipping.”

Many councils in the UK are taking steps to try to encourage residents to reduce waste during holiday periods. Families are being asked to limit the amount of wrapping paper they use since it is made from low-quality paper that often can not be recycled.

Some councils are offering free Christmas-tree recycling and extra kerbside collections, others are offering warnings and threats.
