Medway litterbugs fined for dropping rubbish
8 February 2010
TWO litterbugs have been fined for dropping rubbish in Chatham High Street, Medway.
An environment enforcement officer saw Bahadur Singh (65), of
Chatham High Street, dropping a slip outside a betting shop. He issued him with a fixed fine and ordered him to pick up his rubbish.
When Mr Singh failed to pay the penalty, he was taken to court. However, he
failed to attend on 1st February and was ordered to pay £190 in his absence.
Another litterbug was seen dropping a cigarette stub outside Poundland. Malcolm Warren (59), of Buller Road, failed to pay the £80 fixed caution and was also taken to court.
The unemployed man pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay £130 in fees and fines.
Community safety and enforcement chief Rehman Chishti said: "We want everyone that lives and works in Medway to feel proud of their environment and our officers work hard to keep the area safe and clean.
“Most people don’t litter and make sure they dispose of their rubbish in bins. However, a small minority of people do not. This is anti-social and shows a lack of consideration for others.
“Our officers will hand out fixed penalty notices to those that do this and if people don’t pay these they will end up in court.”
