Avonmouth, Bristol site selected for £180m recycling facility
7 July 2009
AN Avonmouth factory which is no longer in use has been earmarked for a recycling and incineration facility plant.
Waste-management company Viridor said it would like to use the former Sevalco site for recycling and the incineration of waste to produce electricity.
Just a week ago, a £40 million scheme was agreed to build a recycling plant in Avonmouth which would reduce by 80 per cent the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.
The £180 million Viridor scheme involves bin-bag waste being sifted to separate metal, glass and and plastic for recycling. The remnant would be incinerated, to produce enough electricity for an area around the size of Clifton.
As well, incineration residue would be used to produce products for the building industry.
Viridor plans to submit a planning application in autumn 2009 for partial use of the Sevalco site. It also plans to set up public exhibitions to detail its plans to residents of the area and give them the chance to make comments.
