Selby, North Yorkshire anaerobic digestion facility to be UK’s biggest
30 July 2009
NORTH Yorkshire County Council has granted planning permission to build the largest anaerobic digestion facility in the UK.
The £20 million Selby Renewable Energy Park project would not only divert 165,000 tons of food waste from landfill each year but also produce enough electricity to power 11,000 homes.
The Selby Renewable Energy Park, owned by White’s Recycling Solutions, is to be built at the former Tate & Lyle Citric Acid Plant south of Selby.
The facility will include a pre-treatment area for processing packaged food waste. The site already has an anaerobic digester, but two further digesters are planned.
The existing power connection at the site will direct the electricity produced to the national grid. The amount produced is expected to suffice for meeting most of the needs of Selby residents.
In 2007, the government introduced tax increases to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and to promote schemes for anaerobic digestion.
From 1 April, taxes on waste rose to £40 per ton. They will go on rising by £8 yearly during 2011, and perhaps for longer.
