Thornton Heath hit by fly-tipping ‘epidemic’

THORNTON Heath is suffering from a fly-tipping "epidemic", a resident has claimed.

Recently more than 50 tyres were dumped near his home on Bensham Manor Road.

Laurence Gough (61) said he was "utterly frustrated" that his local area was being turned into a dumping ground.

Witnesses said they had seen the tyres being thrown out of a white van that had been driven into the area.

Mr Gough, who has a disability, said this fly-tipping incident was the latest in many that were blighting the area.

It seems that residents will have to pay to get the tyres removed because they were dumped on private land.

Mr Gough said: "It's a hideous eyesore and it's extremely frustrating. Fly-tipping has particularly increased over the last few weeks. It's getting to be an epidemic.

"I phoned the police but they won't investigate it because they said it's not a crime.”

He also phoned Croydon Council but “because it's on private land” they would not clear the tyres.

He added: “We're completely stuck. We would have to pay for somebody to come and collect them but it would cost a fortune."

A Croydon Council spokesman said: "Those people who illegally dump their waste on private land cause huge problems for local people. We know that it can sometimes cost them hundreds of pounds to have this cleared.”
