Walney Beach, Cumbria gets 15 bags of old clothes
3 February 2010
FIFTEEN bags of clothes were found dumped on Walney Beach in Cumbria.
Reginald Perrin is not suspected – but the guilty person is not known. For that reason, a £100 reward has been offered by Barrow Borough Council to anyone who provides information leading to a fly-tipping prosecution.
The 15 black bin-bags containing second-hand clothes were left at Snab Point on Walney, Cumbria’s largest island.
Joan Carroll, senior enforcement officer in the council’s environmental health department, said: “There were 15 bin bags full of clothes and also some general kitchen waste.
“We don’t know where they have come from but it has been suggested it could be from a bogus door-to-door charity collection.
“It’s quite common to get a leaflet or bag through your door asking you to donate unwanted clothes or household items to charity.
“Unfortunately some of these aren’t genuine charities and are worded in a way to deceive people into thinking they are helping others.”
If the £100 reward leads to a prosecution, the guilty person faces a maximum sentence of five years in jail term and/or a fine of up to £50,000.
