Westminster £518m waste contract cleaned up by Veolia

WESTMINSTER City Council yesterday announced one of the UK's largest waste, recycling and street-cleaning contracts.

The contract is with waste-management firm Veolia, the successful bidder for the £518 million contract.



Under the contract, more than 650 staff will working around the clock every day of the year to keep Westminster clean. About 400 street sweepers will ensure that the 628 miles of pavements in Westminster will remain clean.

A fleet of environmentally-friendly rubbish trucks will be used to collect rubbish and items for recycling.



Westminster council hopes that the new contract will lead to a major rise in recycling rates. The current rate is 23 per cent.

The council has won a number of awards for pioneering measures, including installing recycling chutes in blocks of flats.



The contract also covers gritting of streets in icy weather for up to 14 years.



Cabinet member for city management Councillor Danny Chalkley said: "We have an unrivalled reputation for the cleanliness of our streets and take great pride in the fact that in our area street sweepers and binmen are a regular and welcome sight, wherever you may live or work.



"We have managed to negotiate a great deal for the council taxpayer by maintaining the same high standards of service people rightly expect of Westminster, with just as many bin collections and street-cleaning services as before, but at a substantial discount of £800,000 a year.

“We will also reduce our impact on the environment by using new low-carbon technologies."
