Norwich counts the cost of failure to separate recycling items
29 January 2010
THE local councils in Norwich spent more than £150,000 last year to sort rubbish for recycling that had not been correctly separated.
It’s a major problem everywhere. As the UK tries to increase its recycling rates to those prevailing in many other European countries, the government is pressing local councils to find new ways to recycle more and create less waste.
UK recycling rates have been rising, but there’s a long way to go before the country gets close to reaching the goals set out by the European Union.
People’s failure to separate their rubbish correctly raises the cost of separating recyclables. This has a major knock-on effect – it makes the industry less profitable and thus it has less money to invest in the infrastructure.
Norwich is just one example of how costly it is to sort contaminated recycling. In most cases, the wrong kind of plastic – mainly in the form of food trays and packaging – is mixed in with plastic that can be recycled.
The Norwich councils have asked residents to put only plastic bottles, cans and paper in their recycling bins. If their requests have any effect, much money and man-hours will be saved.
