Newport plant to turn food waste into energy
19 January 2010
AN energy plant is to be built near Newport that will recycle rubbish and convert it into power.
Waste Recycling Group recently revealed its plan for the plant on land owned by Solutia. The plant – which will take about two years to complete – will cut the company’s carbon footprint by using steam produced by the facility to generate both heat and electricity.
The plan is part of Project Green, which seeks to support the local authorities of Caerphilly, Cardiff, Monmouthshire, Newport and Vale of Glamorgan.
The new plant is one of a number of waste plants that are planned around the UK.
Food waste in the UK totals an estimated 5.3 million tonnes annually.
The government has recommended various measures to tackle the problem, including banning organic wastes in landfill – by 2020 – and making food-waste pickups mandatory.
A report by Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) recommends that the landfill ban should start earlier, in 2015.
EFRA chairman Michael Jack said food waste should not be dumped in landfills as it could be used as an energy source. Organic wastes can be used for composting.
He said that banning food waste could reduce by 10 per cent the amount of rubbish thrown away by households.
