Cardiff’s £50m recycling plant moves closer

CARDIFF’S planned new waste recycling plant moved closer to reality as a successful round of fundraising for the project took place yesterday.

Waste-recycling technology specialist Sterecycle said it had raised £10 million for its programme of investment in recycling plants that use its environmentally progressive autoclave technology.

The company plans a £50 million plant in Wentloog on the edge of Cardiff. A total of 60 jobs would be created. Black-bag household waste will be sent there instead of to landfill.

The plant is expected to begin operating early in 2011. It will be able to process around 200,000 tonnes of unsorted household or commercial waste each year – the equivalent of the rubbish from 400,000 that is dumped in landfill.

It is also expected to be able to take the municipal waste from councils right across South Wales.

Four other plants are to be built and operated by Sterecycle. It claims that its technology can recover 70% of delivered residual waste from landfill. It treats the waste with steam, then separates it into reusable materials.

Sterecycle’s founder Duncan Grierson said: “This latest round [of fundraising] confirms that, despite the challenging economic environment, there is considerable interest in waste-treatment technology.

“Our proven process, now operating at commercial scale for over 18 months, is ripe for rolling out around the UK.”
