Wrexham man can marry thanks to fly-tipping fight

    25 January 2010

A WREXHAM man can now go ahead with his postponed wedding thanks to a government work scheme in which part of his job is fighting fly-tippers.

Stephen Lucas (22), of Rhos y Medre, Wrexham, was out of a job since Christmas Eve 2008. He was made redundant from his job at a car valetting company.

He and his fiancée had been “waiting almost two and a half years to get married”, he said. Now their wedding is scheduled for October.

He was recommended for the Future Jobs Fund by his Jobcentre Plus adviser and joins 25 other young people in North Wales working with the regeneration group Groundwork.

Stephen has begun working as an environmental projects assistant with the Groundwork team which is improving the Connah’s Quay wetlands.

He said: “The wetlands is an isolated area, and I’m helping to make it more accessible for the public by creating fences and bridges, that kind of thing – and prevent it becoming just an area for fly-tipping.”

The £1 billion Future Jobs Fund is part of the Backing Young Britain campaign. It will fund 150,000 jobs across the UK.

The jobs continue for six months and the workers are paid at least the minimum wage.

The Minister for Employment and Welfare Reform Jim Knight said: “Areas like the Connah’s Quay wetlands suffer badly from fly-tipping, so the work Stephen is now doing is benefiting everyone in the local area. The fact he can now get married is the icing on the cake.”
