Mansfield fly-tipper nabbed by Maid Marion in Sherwood Forest

    29 January 2010

A NOTTINGHAMSHIRE man’s lorry has been seized and will be destroyed because it was used to dump rubbish on land near Sherwood Forest.

On 27 January, Karl Smith (60) pleaded guilty at Mansfield Magistrates Court to two charges relating to illegally dumping waste, including PVC window frames.

Kiran Cassini, for the Environment Agency, told the court that Operation Maid Marion, a fly-tipping initiative, had hidden cameras in the Sherwood Forest area because of the extent of fly-tipping.

In March 2009, a camera was hidden near local beauty spot Baulker Lane, Clipstone. On 13 March 2009, he said, Mr Smith’s Ford Transit lorry was recorded driving into the area with a load of waste. Half an hour later he drove off with no waste on board.

Again, on 21 March 2009, Mr Smith’s vehicle was recorded in the same area with a load that included more PVC window frames, plastic bags and a wooden table.

Mr Smith refused to cooperate with the Environment Agency and was arrested by police on 27 May 2009.

As well as having his lorry destroyed, Mr Smith was ordered to pay £200 in costs and given a three-year conditional discharge.

An Environment Agency officer who took part in the investigation said after the court case: “Fly-tipping is anti-social and pollutes the environment. It also adversely affects the amenity value of the area.”
