Boscombe coal-yard fly-tipping sparks heated complaints

A FORMER coal yard in Boscombe ended up as a magnet for fly-tippers, partly thanks to a hole in a fence that made it easily accessible.

The owner has now been told to clean up the site following action by Boscombe West councillor Phil Stanley-Watts.

Bournemouth Borough Council has ordered owner Starmark Enterprises Ltd, Old Marylebone Road, London, to clear up the yard in Ashley Road, Boscombe.

Cllr Stanley-Watts said he had received complaints about the state of the site in Ashley Road, which had been closed as a coal yard a few years ago.

“There seems to be a lot of fly-tipping there and stuff being dumped. There is a hole in the fence and I understand from residents there has been people partying inside.

“I think it could be dangerous because I don’t think it’s secure and it’s dangerous for children to go near a railway line. It’s a health and safety risk. And there must be investment in the site.”

A Bournemouth council official said: “This is private land. As part of our enforcement powers, we visited the site and noted the rubble has been removed.

“We’ve written to the owner and agent to remind them of their duties to maintain the site in a proper condition and have requested the removal of all accumulations of litter and fly-tipped items.”

Nick Ellis, of the site’s managing agents Ellis and Partners, said the site and an adjoining car wash were likely to be comprehensively redeveloped – with a mix of houses and commercial units.

However, he added: “Due to current economic conditions I don’t expect anything to happen very soon. In the meantime the site is likely to be let for storage purposes.”
