Southampton becomes first Recycle Zone city

SOUTHAMPTON is the first Recycle Zone city in Britain, following a link up with Coca-Cola.



The city's council has joined with Coca-Cola in a new strategic recycling scheme which is designed to reduce waste.



A total of 50 new branded recycling bins will be installed in the city centre as part of the initiative, which also aims to persuade people to be more energy-efficient.



The president of Coca-Cola Great Britain, Sanjay Guha, said: "We're committed to reducing our impact on the environment. As well as putting our own house in order we must help our consumers to do more – Recycle Zones are a great way of doing that.



"We believe that increasing recycling levels is one of the most effective steps we can take to bring us closer to our goal of operating sustainably."



The corporate drinks giant plans to launch a total of 80 Recycle Zones by 2011 across the country in areas such as shopping centres, theme parks, transport centres and universities.

Coke Recycling Zones have already been set up in Thorpe Park and Manchester Airport. The Southampton project is the first time that the company has launched advertising to support the initiative.
