Salisbury Plain fly-tipper dumped 400 motorcycle tyres

THE Army was called in when nearly 400 motorcycle tyres were found dumped in Everleigh Ashes on Salisbury Plain.

Fly-tipping reportedly costs the Army thousands of pounds a year which could otherwise be spent on troops and equipment.

Lt Col Nigel de Foubert said the Ministry of Defence (MoD) had to pay to have the rubbish removed.

"We have a strategic private partner who look after Salisbury Plain and it's not in their contract so we have to pay them.

"We're expending large amounts of energy tidying up after anti-social behaviour – people who have no care for our habitat in Wiltshire. This is burning up our resources, when our two policemen who have to look after 94 acres should be concentrating on their function.

"This is becoming an increasing problem and it is possibly because of recent legislation and charges made by recycling centres for commercial dumping.”

He said the latest incident involved a commercial dump – it was “not an individual with an odd tyre in his back garden”.
