Peterborough postman pilfered porn and panties

    13 October 2009

A PETERBOROUGH postal worker gathered an unusual collection of items during 10 years of hoarding. He also acquired the items in an unusual way.

Following a tip-off, Royal Mail investigators raided postman Alec Clark's home and found packages of pornographic DVDs and female lingerie in his attic. They also found delivery receipts.

When confronted, Alec Clark (35), of Chaucer Road, New England, Peterborough, admitted he had taken the items.

Prosecutor Richard Brown told Peterborough Crown Court: "An investigation uncovered 10 postal packets and receipts from a variety of different companies, including Pabo, who sell sex toys and Figleaves, a women's lingerie firm.

"They found sex toys, underwear, lingerie and books that had been sent through the post."

Clark escaped detection for so long because he would open up a number of delivery packages, extract one or two items, then do up the box again and deliver it.

He was sentenced to six months in prison after he pleaded guilty to two charges of theft, between January 2001 and April 2009, at Peterborough Magistrates' Court. He will serve at least three months in prison.

Royal Mail investigators received a tip-off on May 19 that items intended for delivery had been found stored in the attic of Clark's former home in Walgrave, Orton Malborne, Peterborough.

A raid uncovered 10 packages, including sex toys and 60 pieces of lingerie, in his attic. A search at his current home found stolen pornographic DVDs under his bed.

Clark admitted he began stealing five months after he started work for Parcelforce, which is owned by Royal Mail. He worked as a delivery driver and collections manager, first in Peterborough and then in Cambridge.

He moved out of the house where the items were found on December 30 last year.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "The overwhelming majority of our people are honest and we have a zero-tolerance policy to any dishonesty."
