Merseyside recycling rate rises by one-third

RECYCLING’S on the up in Merseyside – it’s increased by just under one-third in the past decade, according to new figures.

Research by the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA) found that 33.3 per cent of the area’s waste is being disposed of in an environmentally-friendly way.



This compares to a rate of only 6.74 per cent back in 1999, the MWDA’s 2009 Annual Plan report indicated.



However, Councillor Kevin Cluskey, chairman of the MWDA, said too much low-carbon material was still being sent to landfill sites.



He added: "There are so many items that could be recycled or reused, or could generate energy, but they simply end up buried in the ground."



MWDA director Carl Beer added: "This is great news but we can't lose sight of the fact that we are still producing too much waste and need to find alternative methods of disposal."



The MWDA runs an education and awareness programme in order to increase residents’ interest in and awareness of recycling in Merseyside.
