Bedford plans new ways to boost recycling
7 January 2010
BEDFORD Borough Council is under government pressure to reduce the size of its landfills.
As a result, it is looking at new approaches to persuade people to recycle more.
It has been suggested that waste for recycling should be collected one week and rubbish the next – as is done in Central Bedfordshire and Luton, both of which have much higher recycling rates than Bedford.
If Bedford fails to act, it risks failing to meet the recycling targets set by the National Waste Strategy for England.
When it comes to recycling rates, the UK is currently one of the worst countries in the European Union (EU). Well over half of all rubbish ends up in a landfill. In Germany, less than one per cent of waste goes to a landfill.
The UK has thus come under pressure in recent weeks for its failure to meet standards for landfills, as well as those set by the EU.
The EU has set specific goals for all member countries in order to reduce the size of their landfills over five, 10 and 20-year periods.
Councils such as Bedford are seeking innovative ways to increase recycling rates as the pressure grows.
