Cannock Chase fly-tipper spies to get £100 reward

REPORT your local fly-tipper and get a £100 reward – if the information you provide leads to a successful prosecution.

That’s the message from Cannock Chase Council, which approved the scheme after a successful three-month trial.

During 2008-2009, 578 incidents of fly-tipping were reported and of these 443 came from members of the public.

A Tidy Britain Group survey in the Cannock Chase District found that 79 per cent of respondents were ‘very likely’ or ‘fairly likely’ to report a local environmental problem.

Residents who see someone tipping rubbish are asked to note down (as far as possible):

•the time and date
•the location
•a description of the tipped waste
•the vehicle registration number
•a description of the fly-tipper

They should then pass on the information to Cannock Chase Council by phoning 01543 462621 or filling in an online form at www.cannockchasedc. gov. uk.

Councillor Tony Williams, environmental sustainability leader, said: “Cannock Chase Council has a zero tolerance attitude in the battle against the fly-tippers and we will always prosecute where there is sufficient evidence.

“The residents’ response to our campaign has shown that the majority of the public believe fly-tipping is offensive, as well as illegal, and that it blights our area.”

He added: “The maximum fine at magistrates’ court for a fly-tipping offence is £50,000 and up to five years in prison.

“There is just no excuse for illegally dumping rubbish, often in some of the most beautiful spots in our district.”
