Liverpool’s purple bin crisis turns faces red

LIVERPOOL’S purple wheelie bins were left overflowing with rotting waste left over from Christmas after council staff stopped collecting waste on 21 December.

The freezing weather and treacherous roads have almost led to a rubbish crisis nationwide as councils failed to collect waste from thousands of homes.
Many councils suspended collections for over three weeks, amid fears of injury to employees.

The resulting heaps of rubbish have made for unsightly streets and led to angry homeowners and fears of attracting rats in large numbers.


In Liverpool, a spokesman for the city council said: "We're working hard to get bin collections up and running.

We've had the worst weather for 30 years and Liverpool is no different to any other borough.



"We're facing huge challenges, but we're doing our best to get things back to normal."



Meanwhile, environmental health experts have warned that the gathering rubbish could threaten people’s health.
