Calderdale West Yorkshire Council Accelerate Refuse Collections
Calderdale Council are rising to the challenge created by the recent spell of adverse weather, and together with Sita UK, their main outsourced waste collection provider, they have announced plans to clear the backlog of accumulated, uncollected rubbish.
The backlog was created in the first place because the snow and ice made so many back roads impassable. Marks Thompson, Calderdale Council’s head of housing and environmental matters has said that the next two weeks will see an extraordinary, concentrated effort by both themselves and Sita UK, including providing extra refuse vehicles, and collection crews to boost their collection capability.
The crews will also be extending their working hours to work on Saturdays too in an effort to make fast and significant reductions to the piles of rubbish that have gathered. In recognition of difficult times, collection crews will also pick up any recyclable items that are left out in bags or other normally non acceptable containers.
Householders have been advised to put their rubbish out for gathering on what would be their normal collection days, although residents have been warned that in some areas collections may be delayed by a day or two as the crews struggle to catch up with the backlog. Householders have been told to leave their rubbish out until such times as it has been collected.
In terms of waste due for recycling, this too should be put out for collection on the usual day that recycle waste is collected, with the same proviso. As long as the weather does not deteriorate again, it is envisaged that this two weeks’ worth of extra activity ought to be enough to catch up and get things back to normal.
Mark Thompson has admitted that the wintry weather had brought about very challenging circumstances, and he has made a point of thanking all of the borough’s residents for their understanding, patience, and co-operation.
Sita UK’s operations manager, Dave Foster, has also gone on record as saying that the spell of freezing weather has brought about some very difficult conditions, and that the concerted effort that is planned across the next fortnight should see the backlog dispersed. He has stated that areas which pose particular challenges, such as blocks of flats, will be given priority.
Residents have been asked to help to maximise collections, and make them as efficient as possible by:
* Squashing plastic bottles and containers so they take up less space
* Flatten all cardboard boxes
* Squash tin cans to take up less space
* If you have a composter, try to compost as much fruit and vegetable waste as possible
Calderdale’s residents have done a great job through the cold snap, and their continued patience will be a great help and will be much appreciated as efforts get underway to return things back to some semblance of normality as fast as possible.
