North London residents cut waste by half

MORE than 1,000 residents, businesses and schools in north London reduced their waste by up to 50pc in a seven-day initiative.

In the Watch Your Waste Challenge, residents cut their waste by reducing, reusing, recycling and composting as much as they could for one week.

They did so during Watch Your Waste Week, from 4th to 12th October.

Watch Your Waste Week was organised by the North London Waste Authority, in partnership with the seven London boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest.

North London resident Jane Bailey reduced her week’s rubbish down to just one plastic tag.

“I did have to put in quite a bit of extra effort to reduce my rubbish down to one plastic tag, but a lot of what I did was really simple,” she said.

“Thinking about what I needed to buy helped. I tried to avoid packaging on food. I bought meat from the deli counter and loose fruit and vegetables, instead of packaged.”

Nine out of 10 Watch Your Waste challengers bought goods with less packaging, and began composting and using cloth nappies. They plan to continue doing so.

Information-sharing events and activities were organised throughout the week. They included give-or-take days which helped to divert 5.5 tonnes of waste from landfill.

An extra 1,908 people signed up to the mailing preference service to avoid getting junk mail delivered, while an extra 6,807 people became members of Freecycle2.

North London Waste Authority chairman, Cllr Clyde Loakes, said: “This week was a great success and highlights north London’s commitment to reducing the amount of waste we currently throw away.

“I would like to thank all those who took part in the challenge for their efforts.”
