North London boroughs share award for cutting waste

A CAMPAIGN to reduce London’s carbon footprint by cutting waste has been awarded Best Regional Project/Initiative at the LARAC1 Awards in Liverpool.

Watch Your Waste Week took place in the seven north London boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest in October 2008.

The week-long initiative was organised by the North London Waste Authority in partnership with the boroughs.

More than 1,000 residents, businesses and schools cut their waste by up to 50pc. As a result of taking part in the initiative, a total of 87pc of people changed their behaviour in the area of recycling and cutting waste.

The campaign was aimed at highlighting the rising amount of rubbish that is thrown away and at promoting practical ways to reduce it.

Events, roadshows and workshops were held in each borough, while a website was set up with ‘bin-slimming’ information and resources.

Gosport to Portsmouth Ferries and the Buckingham Waste Education Programme were shortlisted for the award.

North London Waste Authority chairman, Cllr Clyde Loakes, said: "It’s a great achievement to receive this award. We have been working with our boroughs since 1986 and are delighted that the strong partnership we have developed has been recognised.

"Preventing waste is a key priority in north London and we are glad that so many people got involved in last year’s campaign.”
