Solihull householders recycle equivalent of 882 bull elephants
19 March 2010
SOLIHULL residents have recycled almost 4,700 tonnes of rubbish since autumn 2009.
The total of 4,700 tonnes is calculated to be the equivalent in weight to 782 bull elephants.
The waste has been collected since Solihull Council launched a new series of kerbside collections.
The council now plans to raise recycling rates further by refusing to collect any additional waste that householders leave beside their black wheelie bin.
Cabinet member for community services, Cllr Kate Wild, said: “The amount of recycling residents have collected so far is fantastic. We hope that by asking residents not to put out extra waste, we can encourage people to make the most of their recycling collections and recycle as much of our waste as possible.”
The council will be adopting the stricter approach from June 1 onwards. Between now and then, it will be working with householders who put out too much waste.
A larger bin can be applied for by larger families and residents with certain medical conditions.
