London mayor asked to clarify recycling plans
17 March 2010
THE London Assembly's environment committee has asked Mayor Boris Johnson
to explain how exactly he plans to reduce the amount of waste produced
in the capital.
London generates more than four million tonnes of municipal waste each
year. Most of this comes from houses and small businesses.
Mr Johnson believes that, by encouraging waste reduction, reuse and recycling,
London will attain a 10pc cut in the waste generated by each house by
2020.
But the London Assembly's environment committee has asked for "clarity
and greater details of the leadership role the mayor will play".
It said that "robust and specific proposals" were needed to
develop adequate waste-management strategies around London.
Committee chairman Murad Qureshi said: "We need a radical change
in the way we manage municipal waste in London as currently far too much
is ending up in landfill.
"We welcome the ambitious targets set by the mayor in his draft strategy
but we need much more detail and clarity on some of the proposals so we
can be confident that these goals can be met."
