Scarborough gets free WEEE collections
26 February 2010
SCARBOROUGH householders are to get free collections of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) from their homes.
The scheme arises thanks to a partnership involving Scarborough Borough Council, a compliance scheme operator and a local reprocessor.
Gateshead-based compliance scheme operator Weeeco says there are 380 other reprocessors in the UK that would be able to run similar schemes.
Householders can contact the Scarborough council or reprocessor RB Markets, which is based in the town, to request collection of WEEE left outside their houses.
RB Markets collects the equipment and takes it to its approved authorised treatment facility (AATF) for reuse.
Items that are not fit to be reused are sent for recycling at Wincanton's Billingham AATF.
The model focuses on reusing items and dealing with material as locally as possible.
Weeeco compliance manager Vince Eckermann said RB Markets was focused on maximising reuse.
