East London recycling plant to make jet fuel out of waste

    16 February 2010

A RECYCLING plant that will produce jet fuel from waste material is to be built in East London. It will be the first plant of its kind in Europe.

British Airways has signed a deal with US company Solena Group, which owns the technology, to build the carbon reclamation and conditioning plant and buy all the fuel produced at the facility to power its fleet at London City Airport.

British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh said: “We believe it will lead to the production of a real sustainable alternative to jet kerosene and are proud to lead the way on aviation’s environmental initiatives.”

The plant would hugely reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill from surrounding London boroughs.

The plant is due to begin producing bio-jet fuel from 2014 onwards. Using plasma gasification technology, it will process all kinds of biomass and residual feedstock.

An estimated 500,000 tonnes of waste will be converted yearly into 16 million gallons of ‘green’ aviation fuel – saving local authorities in the area up to £36m in landfill tax.

Four sites in East London are being considered for the plant. At least 20 acres of land and good transport links will be required.

According to MRW, one site being considered is in the Lower Lea Valley, which runs along the boundary of the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Newham and into the River Thames.

The 1,500-acre, brown-field site is being developed to house the 2012 Olympics Games and Stratford City developments. After the Games, it will return to the ownership of the London Development Agency for “planned and sustainable disposal”.
