Enfield’s winning schoolchildren in recycling drive

A POSTER designed by children from a school in Enfield and aimed at promoting recycling was launched yesterday on a fleet of rubbish trucks.

Pupils from Chace Community School won a competition to have their design placed on 65 advertising boards in streets and on roadsides throughout the London borough as well as on nine rubbish trucks for the next six weeks.

Copies of their design have also been distributed to local libraries and schools.

The competition was organised by waste-management company SITA and the Enfield Education Business Partnership.

Pupils also had to come up with inventive ways of reusing used items, such as tins of food, and to design a recycling site for an imaginary village.

The pupils – Robyn Morgan Campbell, Matthew Sharman, Yasmin Cazeau, Ellie Savage and Stephanie Killick – are all Year 9 pupils at Chace Community School. They beat 90 other pupils from Enfield Grammar School and Highlands to win both the first and the runner-up prize.

SITA UK has since decided to launch a competition for schools all across London later this year.

Chace Community School head teacher Sue Warrington said: “We are absolutely delighted and proud of them. It’s a very important message.”

SITA director Marek Gordon said; “Because this poster is designed by kids it sends a very direct message that we have to recycle, while also saying this is what recycling is about.”
