Redbridge, Essex householders urged to recycle old phone books

REDBRIDGE, Essex householders have been urged to recycle old phone books so that they do not have to be sent to landfill.

Redbridge Council has called on residents to put copies of their Yellow Pages and other telephone directories in recycling boxes and bins.

A council spokeswoman said: "Yellow Pages and all types of telephone directories can now be recycled in your kerbside recycling box or flats recycling bin along with newspapers and magazines.

"This will help to boost recycling and reduce the amount of waste which goes to landfill.

"In the past some UK paper mills have not accepted Yellow Pages for recycling, but this has now changed because of a reduction in the intensity of the ink used to make the books yellow.

"Millions of the recycled directories will get turned into animal bedding, cardboard, Jiffy bags, egg boxes and loft insulation.”

The council also suggested that residents with internet access cancel their delivery of this year's directories.

"Seven out of ten people now have internet access and no longer need paper directories, so Redbridge Council is asking residents to call or email providers such as BT, Yellow Pages and Thomson to cancel their delivery,” the spokeswoman said.

"Alternatively, residents who no longer use a directory can cancel them and various other junk mail by visiting junkbuster.org.uk."
