Streatham and West Norwood residents join food recycling scheme
13 March 2010
HOUSEHOLDERS in Streatham and West Norwood have been urged to recycle their food waste as a scheme that began last year is extended to their areas.
Around 1,500 houses in Streatham, in the Gracefield Gardens and Sunnyfield Road area, and 1,500 in West Norwood have been given special kitchen equipment to separate food waste and kitchen scraps for recycling.
By using the kitchen caddy, outdoor caddy and starch liners, they can separate cooked and uncooked food waste.
Lambeth Council will collect the waste each week and have it turned into compost that will be used by farmers in south-east England. This will obviate the need for artificial fertilisers, while the recycling means the food waste does not end up in landfill sites.
The extra houses have been added to a food-waste trial that began in July 2009, covering 8,000 homes in Lambeth.
Lambeth Council said the trial had been successful. Around 60 per cent of houses use the service regularly.
Householders in Streatham and Thornton wards are the top performers – 73 per cent are participating in the scheme.
Lambeth's cabinet member for environment, Cllr Sally Prentice, said: “Food waste is a major contributor of greenhouse gases if it is sent to landfill, so this is an important new service."
