Suffolk Champions the Recycling Movement
Recycling in the county of Suffolk is one the way up. Figures recently released by DEFRA show that residents are responsible for achieving a record 48.8% in the recycling of household waste making Suffolk the 7th best county in the UK for their recycling rate. It is one of only seven counties to win Government funding of £10,000 to put towards increasing awareness and improving understanding of recycling household waste.
Suffolk County Council are leading the fight to improve the amount of household waste being recycled through the 18 recycling centres across the county, with the various initiatives that they are employing. One of these initiatives is their school waste education program aimed at teaching the future generation of the county’s householders the benefits of effective recycling. Schools are also encouraged to dispose of their electrical waste, and youngsters are told all about the WEEE regulations and the forms that must accompany every batch of electrical refuse sent to centres for recycling.
The County Council are staunch supporters of the Master Composter Volunteer program, and they are also leading the way as one of the front runners in promoting the WRAP (Waste and Resources Planning) program.
In the city of Ipswich, the local authority and residents alike are celebrating the success of the 28 twin “recycling on the go” bins that have recently been introduced onto the high streets, enabling shoppers and visitors to the city alike to recycle “on the hoof”. The twin recycling bins are colour coded, (black & blue, the same colours used for household refuse bins), and each have prints on their outside showing what can be put into them.
A lot of effort has also been out into the development of the Suffolk Recycling website. It carries very useful hints and tips on what can and cannot be recycled, together with items of breaking news and new trends and initiatives in the recycling world. It’s a great way of promoting a community spirit, and of focusing residents’ minds to the importance of recycling as much as possible, diverting refuse away from costly and environmentally unfriendly landfill sites.
