Leeds ‘Green Tower Block’ residents save thousands

PEOPLE living in a Leeds tower block have benefited from a hugely successful ‘Green Tower Block’ scheme.

They have saved a combined total of £10,000 on their annual fuel bills in the past year.

A recycling area was created inside the building. This replaced an internal rubbish and waste chute that was malfunctioning.

In the scheme run by West North West Homes Leeds (WNWHL), they also reduced CO2 emissions by over 7,000 tonnes – equivalent to the emissions produced by driving an average family car from Lands End to John O’ Groats 32,000 times, or around the world 1,100 times.

The scheme was launched in February 2009 at the 69-apartment Grayson’s Crest, Kirkstall.

Substantial refurbishments were carried out in order to make the building more energy-efficient and to reduce the residents’ fuel bills. The refurbishment included fitting cavity wall insulation and external cladding.

In the year since then, residents have saved between £100 and £145 on their annual fuel bills.

The Grayson’s Crest scheme has won the 2010 Considerate Constructor Scheme National Site Awards, which recognise excellent standards of consideration towards a company’s workforce, their neighbours and the environment.

Grayson Crest resident David Ballard said: “The improvements have made a real difference. The recycling in particular has worked a lot better than I expected it to and I now recycle all my rubbish.

“As part of the works, I also had my bathroom refurbished and had new kitchen units put in which are much better. The work has definitely had a positive impact on me and the whole block looks cleaner and tidier than before.”

The works were carried out after residents were consulted. It also followed a customer survey which pointed to the need to refurbish the building extensively.
