Sutton AD plant downsized after waste recalculation

AN anaerobic digestion facility planned for the London borough of Sutton is to have around half the capacity that was originally planned.

Viridor has submitted a new planning application because a reassessment concluded that less waste will be produced in the surrounding boroughs – Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton – than was originally estimated.

The company got permission in 2008 to build a plant capable of processing 75,000 tonnes of waste a year. But following the reassessment it has been decided that a smaller facility will suffice.

Viridor now plans build a 30,000-tonne plant at its recycling and landfill site in Beddington Lane, Sutton at a cost of £15 million.

Viridor regional manager Mike Stafford said: “Our site in Beddington is very well placed to host this facility as it is already considered a strategic site for waste treatment in the local and regional waste and minerals plans.

“Comprehensive assessments conclude that there would not be any significant impacts on the local community or the environment.”
