London's waste infrastructure gets £28 million funding boost
10 March 2010
THE London Waste and Recycling Board is to allocate a total of £28 million to projects that develop the waste infrastructure in the city.
The board is to identify 20 projects over the next 12 months that best fit London Mayor Boris Johnson’s preferred approach to waste management. It will then help to develop the business plans of these projects.
Community projects, recycling projects, flats recycling and initiatives to produce energy from waste will be prioritised.
Board chairman James Cleverly said: “We have identified a clutch of projects that we could support and help fund over the next 12 months.
“These innovative schemes will deliver the most ‘bang for their buck’, save councils and their residents money and make it easier for people to manage their waste. This year will be the year of delivery for us.”
The board announced the allocation in its business plan which has been developed in the context of the London mayor’s waste priorities. These include measures to boost recycling rates in London, to make more money out of waste, to clean up the streets, to use less polluting waste technologies, and to save up to £90 million.
Savings are expected through optimising recycling, reducing to zero the amount of waste sent to landfill, and generating energy from the waste that can not be recycled.
