Dagenham plant to get London plastic bottles for recycling

WASTE-management firm Shanks is to supply plastic bottles collected in London to a bottle-to-bottle recycling plant in Dagenham, east London.

Bottle-to-bottle recycler Closed Loop Recycling (CLR) has been receiving bottles collected by Veolia Environmental Services since the Dagenham plant opened in June 2008.

CLR managing director Chris Dow told MRW that the new supply agreement was a welcome commitment by Shanks to recycling in the country rather than exporting material abroad.

“We are talking about bottles collected in London and processed in its London materials recycling facilities. This means the bottles will only travel about three miles from its MRF to our facility.”

It marked “a great step forward”, he added.

It was important for waste-management companies to send their material to local reprocessors, he said. “This plant would not have been built without the commitment of waste companies – first Veolia and now Shanks – to guarantee supply of material.”

Mr Dow said he wanted to see UK facilities processing UK waste material for UK packaging.

“We want to shrink the radius from which we get our bottles. London collects 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes of bottles a year and we don’t want to see any of these bottles from inside the M25 going to export. Why export them? Why not send them here?”

CLR plans to open its second plant in Wales later this year.
