Dagenham Dock plant to generate energy from waste

A GASIFICATION plant planned for Dagenham Dock is to generate heat and power out of East London’s waste.

The plant is one of four facilities that eco-waste management company Cyclamax plans to build in the UK. They will use advanced conversion technology to use commercial and non-recyclable waste collected from businesses in their area.

The Dagenham plans are included in the next phase of development of the London Sustainable Industries Park.

The plant will lead to an estimated 46,400 tonnes of CO² being avoided each year and 35 jobs will be created.

The gasification process in the Dagenham Dock plant, which is highly efficient, will produce up to 16MW of energy each year. The compnay says that that is enough energy to power 31,500 households in Barking and Dagenham.

In the gasification process, the waste is heated in an oxygen-controlled environment to a high temperature until synthesis gas is produced. This gas can then be combusted in the same way as the gas in a domestic central-heating boiler.

The waste that will be used included treated wood wastes, damaged or expired supermarket stock, contaminated packaging, and other material that it is not worth recycling.

A company spokesman said it was expected that the plant would be completed by the end of 2012.
