Vale of Glamorgan kitchen recycling scheme gets ‘amazing’ response
12 March 2010
A VALE of Glamorgan kitchen waste recycling scheme has diverted a “mammoth amount” of waste from landfill.
It is estimated that 20,000 households in the Vale have joined the scheme which began just over a year ago. It now covers more than one-third of householders in the area.
Since the scheme, Vale of Glamorgan Council has collected more than 665 tonnes of kitchen waste for recycling from kerbside caddies.
This amount is said to be equivalent to more than 50 red double-decker buses.
The council’s cabinet member for visible and building services, Cllr Geoff Cox, said: “A year into the scheme and a mammoth amount has been diverted from landfill and, instead, recycled and turned into a soil enhancer.
“The response by the majority of residents has been amazing and they have truly embraced the essence of the scheme.”
The head of visible services, Miles Punter, said: “I must thank residents who have so keenly supported the council to embrace this Assembly Government initiative. We must reach a 12% kitchen waste recycling target by 2013 or risk facing hefty fines.
“We are on track to roll out the scheme to all residents by the end of next year.”
In the third stage of the programme, the whole of Penarth and Dinas Powys were included.
