Hull recycling scheme is a ‘phenomenal success’

HULL City Council claims that a revamp of its recycling collection system has been a “phenomenal success”.

The city’s recycling rate in February has almost doubled compared to last year.

In February 2009, a total of 24% of household waste was recycled. In February 2010, the total has risen to 46%.

When it started its new recycling scheme, the council set a target of 45% recycling by April 2011, so the target has been surpassed one year ahead.

Hull council’s sustainable waste development manager, Doug Sharp, said: “It is particularly impressive that we have achieved such high recycling levels in the winter months.”

In September 2009, the council introduced the new recycling scheme. It has now been extended to most of the city’s 117,000 households.

In the scheme, the council changed to a three-bin system – one for garden and food waste, one for mixed recyclables, and one for residual waste. Collection rounds were also reorganised to ensure efficiency.

If clothes, shoes and textiles are left in sealed bags next to the bins on collection days, they can now also be recycled.
The changes followed a long consultation process with residents.

A council spokesman said: “We are absolutely staggered that we have had this level of response already. The new system really has been a phenomenal success.”
