Great Dunmow, Essex waste centre gets go-ahead – after three decades

GREAT Dunmow in Essex is finally getting a recycling and waste-management centre.

The go-ahead for the facility ends more than three decades of uncertainty.

The planning permission for the new centre for recycling household waste has been welcomed by the Great Dunmow councillor Susan Barker.

"We still have a long way to go because land needs to be compulsory purchased. But we have been waiting for this since around 1976 so to finally get planning permission is brilliant news,” she said.

The centre will be located at the southern edge of the Great Dunmow, behind the ambulance station at Hoblongs junction, close to the Travelodge hotel.

It will include a waste transfer and bulking station for separating trade and household rubbish.

It will also serve as a new site for the district's bin lorries, diverting them from the old district council offices in High Street.

Concerns were raised about traffic capacity around the junction on Chelmsford Road, but the council has agreed to try to compulsory-purchase land in order to improve the junction, including a roundabout.
