London charity funding will help young homeless while boosting furniture recycling

    13 October 2009

THE London Waste & Recycling Board is providing £100,000 in funding that will help to establish three furniture recycling shops in the city.

The grant is being allocated to the charity Trinity, which provides homeless people with both work and housing. Trinity estimates that the project will help to create 69 jobs.

Young homeless people who work in the charity's shops learn new skills, while proceeds from the sales are used to provide training and accommodation.

The first of the three new outlets is planned to open before the end of 2009 near Uxbridge High Street.

The charity also plans to buy three second-hand vehicles, convert them to run on bio-diesel and use them to collect unwanted furniture.

Up to 400,000 tonnes of furniture are sent to landfill each year in the UK. Trinity shops already divert 1,000 tonnes of furniture from landfill.

The funding from the London Waste and Recycling Board will help to divert another 2,000 tonnes of furniture.

London Mayor Boris Johnson, who chairs the London Waste and Recycling Board, said: “Trinity is a truly exceptional project. Thanks to this funding, the charity can expand its excellent work in saving perfectly useable furniture from ending up in landfill, whilst also providing employment and skills for homeless people.

"This ticks all the right boxes in helping to exploit the value of waste and stimulating a green economy in the capital."
