Kent council to agree pioneering recycling deal with Marks and Spencer

    6 March 2010

KENT County Council and Marks and Spencer are negotiating a deal that is part of a local authority initiative that it is believed “will change the face of recycling in the UK”.

The retailer says it wants to dramatically reduce slash the amount of waste that is sent to landfill.

Marks and Spencer plans a total of four local authority recycling partnerships.
It has already announced an initiative with Somerset council and expects to sign a deal with Kent later this year.

The initiative will greatly improve kerbside recycling scheme and, by 2015, enable the councils to collect an extra 60,000 tonnes of recyclable material from 6 million people each year.

Around 15,000 tonnes of packaging waste will be diverted back into food packaging and reused by M&S, while another 45,000 tonnes will be sold to other packaging producers.

For householders, the plan means that more materials – such as plastic food and drink packaging – will be collected from their homes.

Kent County Council leader Cllr Paul Carter, who also chairs the Kent Partnership, said: "This new way of working is a real win for Kent's council taxpayers. By working with business to reduce the cost of their packaging, we are demonstrating our determination to provide Kent residents with the best value for money."

The chairman of the Kent Waste Partnership and the council’s cabinet member for waste, Cllr Nick Chard, said: "This project is highly innovative in that it makes a direct link between the packaging that retailers sell and the cost of its collection from the doorstep by councils. The Kent Waste Partnership and M&S are determined to make it succeed."

Marks & Spencer’s head of packaging Dr Helene Roberts said: “This is a pioneering project that we believe will change the face of recycling in the UK.”
