Redcar plant makes green firm a recycling star

PLASTIC recycling firm Greenstar Waste Exchange Services has achieved "new production records" for plastic flake of food-grade quality that is produced at its Redcar plant.

It produced 689 tonnes of recycled HDPE (r-HDPE) flake in December 2009. Most of the material was used by dairy firms to make new milk bottles.

The company said 2009 was an "outstanding year" for producing the plastic stream. A total of 5,900 tonnes of r-HDPE were created for use in making packaging.

Greenstar WES – the plastics recycling arm of Irish-owned waste management and recycling firm Greenstar UK – also claimed that it had bettered the December figures "a few percentage points" in January 2010.

Greenstar WES founder and managing director James Donaldson said: "It's fitting that we closed an outstanding year by hitting our highest production level – and then beat that in the first month of the new decade."

The company has r-HDPE supply deals with three of Britain’s biggest dairies: Arla, Dairy Crest and Wiseman. Its rHDPE flake went into more than over 140 million plastic milk bottles made in December with recycled content.
